Name: Ginshu
Age: Mid to late twenties.
Gender: Ginshu was born male, though it is tradition for persons playing to role of “Ginshu” to live as the opposite sex. He currently has no sexual organs, however (cry), and so his sex is neuter while his gender is male. (See notes!)
Canon: Amatsuki.
Timeline: Chapter 35, before Teiten’s reset.
Character History:
A (substantial) link is fine, too.
The wiki is made of sadness and human tears, but here it is for reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amatsuki#Other_characters
The rundown goes like this:
Ginshu was an orphaned child. His name was Ayame, and a kindly elderly woman took him in and raised him, and they had a good relationship. When he was in what appears to be his early to mid teens, he was called to serve in a powerful shrine as the Ginshu. The Ginshu is a decoy priestess, whose purpose is solely to protect the real holy princess. He was grateful for the honor, and though it hurt him to leave the elderly woman who had been a mother to him, he left to live and serve in the shrine.
He was educated there, and learned all of the duties of being a figurehead. Despite a penchant for undignified behavior such as flopping tiredly on the floor, he learned how to handle himself with aplomb. Despite his innately teasing and friendly disposition, he mastered the ability to garner respect and hold attention to himself. He became well-learned and able to carry himself with grace when necessary.
He grew to love the real holy princess, an eternally childlike girl named Shinshu, like his own sister. He was utterly devoted to her and spent as much time playing with her as he could. Over time, however, he began to feel stifled in the shrine. He adored Shinshu and cared for the monks and priestesses, but being a figurehead was exhausting and self-sacrificing work.
One day during the winter, a young demon breached the barrier surrounding the shrine. The demon (who called himself Byakuroku even though that was not his name, and eventually received the name Bonten) tried to kill him, because the holy princess exterminated demons, and as a demon himself, he thought that was rather a bad thing. Ginshu, however, told him that he was only a decoy princess, and the demon decided it wasn’t worth it to try and kill him.
Over time, the demon and Ginshu formed a taboo and secret friendship. Ginshu began to question what was so different between humans and demons, and while he was prepared to kill Bonten should he ever raise a hand against a human, he grew to genuinely care for him.
Word of Bonten’s illicit friendship spread among the demons, and perhaps as expected, they weren’t so keen on it. A demon named Kobae attacked Bonten, ruining his wings and using him as bait to lure Ginshu out past the barrier. As expected, Ginshu ran out to Bonten, and when Kobae attacked him, he was poisoned by Ginshu’s holy blood and swiftly exorcised. Ginshu sneaked Bonten into the shrine and cared for him until he had healed enough to run back into the forest.
Their friendship continued, and Ginshu met Bonten’s adoptive father, an ancient snake demon named Byakuroku on accident, and Byakuroku spurred his search for truth. Ginshu spent hours researching what it was that made humans and demons so different. In his studies, he began to neglect Shinshu, who went looking for companionship out beyond the barrier and befriended some demons (one of whom was Bonten’s adoptive brother, a tree spirit named Tsuyukusa).
When it became known that Shinshu was missing, the priestesses all panicked and rushed into the forest. Everyone was frightened, and the priestesses harmed Tsuyukusa, which naturally peeved Byakuroku off in a mighty fashion. It turned into a bloodbath rather quickly, and Ginshu threw himself in front of Shinshu to save her life. Byakuroku killed him, but his blood killed Byakuroku, and so they both died protecting their loved ones.
Shinshu’s powers were such that in her mind-bending and agonizing heart-break, heaven had to intervene before she destroyed the world. Her powers were removed and put into Bonten, who had to bind Ginshu’s soul into Byakuroku’s dead body in order to give him some semblance of life.
Basically, everything was ruined because of fear and ignorance, and Ginshu’s spirit was forced into a body that continually rejects him. Every day he feels the pain of death. He literally dies every day, but never permanently. He's stuck in a cycle of death and rebirth, and it causes him to despair. He tells one of his priestesses that in that body, human emotions like joy and happiness and even pain are distant to him. He says he's afraid that he's going to lose himself one day, and he doesn't know what will happen should that come to pass.
He lived, but his body rejected his soul, and every day he died and every day he was born anew. He had the bitter gift of eternal life. His relationship with Bonten was ruined and things were never the same between himself and Shinshu either. He continued to perform his duties as Ginshu, and when Toki appeared, all wide-eyed and powerful, he tried very hard to get him to help him, to overthrow the heaven that bound people to cruel fates.
Eventually, he defies heaven and causes Teiten to “reset” the world like had happened before when he was put in Byakuroku’s body. Fates were changed, and while the extent of the effect hasn’t yet been revealed, he is replaced with another Ginshu and everyone in heaven’s net has their memories altered.
Character Personality:
Be thorough; we consider this the backbone of your app, and we will not be accepting revisions for this section if the application team finds it lacking. Focus on an analysis of character personality and motivations and use specific examples as evidence. We want to see how well your grasp is of the character’s psychology, so don’t turn this into a History section.
Ginshu's role in life is to be a protector. He is less concerned with the pomp and circumstance behind what it means to be Ginshu, and more concerned with the actual brass tacks of his job. He is a decoy, and he has given himself completely to that.
A Ginshu is a fake high priestess who serves in the shrine to protect the identity of the real priestess. The real priestess is a little girl named Shinshu who never ages in mind or body past about five years, is beloved by heaven and has visions of the future. Such a power is dangerous, and there is no end to the amount of people, both human and demon, who would like to see her blood spilled. The Ginshu exists to protect her.
This Ginshu is the 28th to hold the title, and he loves Shinshu deeply. He cares for her more sincerely than most people care for their blood siblings. He bakes her treats, attempts to teach her manners, and spoils her at every opportunity. She calls him ‘big brother’ despite the fact that a Ginshu is supposed to be sexless, and the tradition is for male Ginshus to live as females and female Ginshus to live as males. He tells her to call him ‘big sister’, but she never does. He adores her to the point that he gave his life to protect her, throwing himself in front of an ancient and powerful snake demon so that she could escape. At the core, this is who he is. He is a dedicated and loving protector.
He is an independent spirit, and is not content with accepting something as truth simply because that’s what somebody in authority told him, or because that’s how people have always thought. He desires the truth, above all, even if it is something he knows he will not be comfortable with. When he began to question what the difference was between humans and demons, the questions gnawed at him. He never questioned his role as a protector, but he threw himself into study to divine the truth of the situation. He couldn’t see an difference between Shinshu and the young Bonten, and his need for the truth drove him to neglect the person he cared about more than anyone in the world.
And then things went pear-shaped and he blames himself for everything bad that happened. If he had been less selfish, if he had contented himself with his role and simply been there for Shinshu, none of it would have happened. Byakuroku would still be alive, he would be in his own body, and his relationships with his loved ones would be healthy. He’s bitter, but he keeps that inside of himself, choosing to be cheerful and bright for the sake of everyone who is still depending on him.
He hates his eternal life. He never wanted such a thing, and is resentful over the fact that he must live again each day only to experience death once more. He is not afraid to die, and defies the will of heaven in an attempt to both save the people he cares about and finally find peace in death. All of his relationships were ruined, and he holds himself responsible for the cosmic shift and the horrors which could have been avoided. The physical pain doesn’t torment him half as much as guilt, and the fear that his existence will bring harm to the human world.
He distances himself from Shinshu, fearful and guilt-stricken, and his relationship with Bonten never fully recovers. Kurotobi, a human ninja, says that Ginshu is always scheming ways to capture Bonten who became the leader of the demons upon his father’s death, but in truth they still talk. The warmth between them is lost, but Ginshu continues to seek him out, to allow him through barriers so that they can talk. Ginshu can’t quite give up on him. They shouldn’t’ve ever met, but their feelings for each other remain, and though Ginshu blames Bonten as much as he blames himself, he can’t bring himself to cut Bonten out of his life. Toki notices the tenderness with which they speak of each other, and he wonders why they are both so hurt.
That’s a lot of heavy underwater sort of stuff. Most people, upon first meeting Ginshu, would never guess he carried such painful things in his heart. On the surface, Ginshu is charming. He’s always quick to laugh and impossible to embarrass. He tells people that his skin is the way it is because a powerful snake cursed him, and people seem to buy it. He keeps his bitternesses to himself, always putting on a cheerful face, always making sure that he looks strong. He says that he’s forgotten how to cry, and while the painful things he’s experienced motivate him, he keeps them locked up very tightly and keeps them to himself.
Character Abilities you would like to expand on further:
For any abilities your character possesses not already elaborated in Personality. Includes street fighting abilities, martial arts prowess, genius-level cooking, or skills in any field.
As a priestess, Ginshu has had all of the education befitting someone of his station. He is skilled in both reading and writing as well as demon lore and history. He can perform exorcisms, as well as write various charms (such as for travelling long distances in a short time between torii gates) and erect and maintain barriers. It can also be inferred that he can perform spells such as for misdirection. All of his skills are those which are taught to priestesses, and won’t really be any use to him in game.
Perhaps most notably, he also possesses the ability to separate his soul from his body, but this will also be nixed in game.
Character Weaknesses you would like to expand on further:
Most of these were touched on in the personality section, but his past traumas were a huge detriment. They’ve made him brittle in unhealthy ways and given him a serious savior complex. He’s going to struggle with really trusting people, and will have a hard time opening himself up beyond his ‘business face.’
[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What abilities will your character retain in Soul Campaign?
He won’t be keeping anything but his charming personality.
What weaknesses will your character lose or gain in Soul Campaign?
His cycle of death and rebirth will be paused, and he will no longer spend a portion of every day as a spirit divorced of body.
He will, however, retain all the other troubles that come with living in a body that used to belong to a giant snake. His scales will occasionally shed, he will not do well in the cold and his genitals will still be MIA.
The wish Death the Kid made to the BREW in 2009 was to “rescue Death City and stop the waves of Madness from overtaking the world.” By whatever means necessary. Pretend you are the BREW. Why would you choose to bring this character to Death City?
Where I the BREW, I would choose to bring Ginshu foremost for his respect for all life, human and otherwise. His desire for truth, and if not mercy, then justice is optimal for an environment such as one in game, as well as his desire to protect the weak and helpless. He’s not interested in taking on somebody else’s burdens, but he will fight tooth and nail to protect those who can’t protect themselves.
If your character has difficulty verbally communicating or can’t verbally communicate at all (mute or non-humanoid), elaborate on how this will be treated in the game. N/A
[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]
Why is your character a Meister and not a Weapon?
In canon, Ginshu’s sole purpose is to serve as a decoy for the real Holy Princess. His role is invaluable, but passive. He studies and performs exorcism work, but ultimately it is the mere fact that he exists that is his greatest service. He rejects this role, however, and bucks the system, taking matters into his own hands and rebelling against heaven. It is his rejection of an existence as a weapon, an extension of somebody else's power, and his assertion of his own control over the situation that I believe makes him more suitable for the role of meister than weapon.
What is your character’s Meister Ability? Why?
My top three choices areSoul Disguise, Soul Kekkai and Soul Protect.
I chose Soul Disguise and Soul Protect because I felt there was a direct correlation between them and his role in canon. Ginshu is a decoy, a body double. His true nature is known only to very few people, and that’s his whole purpose.
I chose Soul Kekkai because it is his nature to throw up walls and try to contain damage. If he could lock himself in with the devil to keep everyone else out and safe, he would. He is self-sacrificial to a fault, and it's his desire to protect the people he cares about that causes such trouble in canon.
[ SOUL INFORMATION ]
Describe your character’s soul with six adjectives.
Lonely, bright, veracious, tender, bittersweet, dedicated.

[Ginshu smiles brightly at the screen. If he’s upset, it doesn’t show on his face. Any panic at being grabbed away from his own world, any despair at being taken away from Shinshu has ebbed. His fears are all locked away and there is no trace of them in his demeanor. This isn’t what he’d expected, but he’ll deal. His respect for the Unwritten Page has increased tenfold -- this sort of thing, it’s a bit much to parse.
But he’ll deal with all of that later. Right now he has people to talk to, and that means falling back on his best holy princess behavior. The scales on his face reflect the light from the display as he regards it, and the laughter in his eyes seems genuine.]
My name is Ginshu, and I understand that arriving here is not at all unusual. I’ve never heard of Nevada before. [He says the name carefully, smiling because he’s sure it sounds as foreign out of his mouth as it feels on his tongue.] Leaving seems out of the question, but I was hoping somebody might tell me more about this place.

Ginshu felt no fear as the hand reached down to him from heaven. There was no terror, only resolve. A god who placed such cruel laws in balance was not worthy of respect or obeisance. His heart lifted as he was struck down, eager for the respite of death. At last. The Unwritten Page would take care of Shinshu and Bonten. It was selfish of him, but he was certain that Tokidoki would respect his dying wish. He would be at peace.
Darkness washed over him.
And then --
He blinked.
Despite the countless times his body had died, Ginshu was no expert on what happened afterward. He felt both light and heavy at the same time. For the first time in a very long while, his soul was at ease. His body ached, but the pain wasn’t the same. He couldn’t feel his soul fighting to stay in his body. But, it wasn’t completely right either...
He touched his face and felt his heart sink. Scales. This couldn’t possibly be nirvana, could it? No, his body was... still not his own. He looked around the room, crawling into an upright position. It might have scared him once, all dark and foreboding. There wasn’t much that frightened him any more, though. Now he simply observed it. The chains hung thick and heavy from the ceiling, making the air feel heavy. Perhaps he was going to be judged? Perhaps he was going to be damned or eviscerated or cursed to wander the in-between places as a ghost. He wasn’t afraid.
When the screens blazed to life, he stood and squared his shoulders. He might be an abomination, but he was the twenty-eighth Ginshu, and whatever was coming, he would face it head on. He would not go into the unknown as a man unworthy of his little sister’s love.
